IoT Security vs. Enterprise Showdown SKIT
Why we created this – The Director’s Notes
The industry, as a whole, has not come to the realization that Internet-of-Things technologies are not compatible with the current standards used for security. The at-a-glance response for anyone considering an IoT or Crypto-IoT project is to use enterprise security. Firewalls, threat management systems, privacy tools and such are what come to mind for many people. However these tools are static enterprise tools designed to protect offices and data centers, not geographically distributed IoTs.
In order to address the IoT security problem, the industry must first recognize the problem and accept that it is a problem. The tools to support IoT and Crypto-IoT platforms dont exist. This may be a chicken and egg problem. Do they not exist because of the foundational business enablers such as Acreto’s offering have not existed or the number of IoT and Crypto-IoT business applications have not peaked to demand the business enablers? At Acreto IoT Security we believe the former is the case.
Summoning Our Inner Howard Cosell
With this skit we wanted to highlight the major differences between IoT and enterprise technologies to set the foundation for why IoT security has a unique set of challenges. Aside from being technologies that communicate, they are different in every aspect including hardware, software, operating models, resource requirements, lifespan and operating costs. We summoned up our inner Howard Cosell to highlight the differences between aging, sluggish enterprise technologies (represented by the Gorilla) with a focus on securing offices and data centers. And the newer nimble, agile, highly distributed IoTs (represented by the Swarm of Bees). IoTs do not singularly move the needle, but their scale is driving a pivotal change in how we compute and how we live.
We hope you enjoy this.
